What is SaaS – short for Software as a Service?

If you buy a software, you usually get only a licence to use the respective software. The software vendor has to provide the customer with a licence, nowadays in terms of an installation package.

The customer needs the appropriate hardware-equipment for the software to be installed. Furthermore the customer has to take care of purchase and replacement, support, maintenance, installation and the (daily) updates of the hardware.

With SaaS by contrast the approach is to host the Software remotely (at service providers).
